FDA Again Sends Warning Letters To Companies Selling CBD Products - Nothingbuthemp

Image
The agency targets companies marketing CBD-infused food and beverage products with warning letters amid calls for more regulatory clarity. In a move that seems to be the FDA's only go-to action concerning businesses that sell CBD products , the agency once again issued warning letters to five companies that market and sell CBD-infused food and beverage items, according to a recent news report . The enforcement action mirrors similar steps the agency took this past May and on a handful of other occasions since the Farm Bill of 2018 made hemp and its derivatives, including CBD, federally legal.   The seemingly random selection of the five targeted companies continues a frustrating pattern on the part of the regulatory body when it comes to handling CBD as a perplexingly controversial additive to food and beverage items monitored by the agency. Additionally, the action comes amid continued calls for the FDA to finally provide a regulatory pathway for the lawful marketing of the non-in...

Minnesota Senators To Renew Push For Marijuana Legalization in 2023 - Nothingbuthemp

With a new Democratic majority, Minnesota is primed for another attempt at legalizing adult-use cannabis.   On Tuesday, the likelihood of marijuana becoming legal in Minnesota took a significant step forward as Democrats successfully flipped the state Senate giving them majorities in both chambers, according to a recent news release . Voters also re-elected pro-reform Democratic Governor Tim Walz (D), further strengthening the prospects of finally passing legislation to make cannabis legal for all those 21 years and older in the state. The Democratic leadership on Wednesday wasted no time in announcing that the issue would be among those discussed as part of their 2023 legislative agenda.    During a press briefing, Senator Erin Murphy (D), who spearheaded campaign strategy for the party this election cycle and is expected to be chosen as the new majority leader, shared that members "are going to get together for the first time tomorrow to begin to talk about the agenda,...

New Bill Creating A Federal Cannabis Commission Introduced In The Senate - Nothingbuthemp

Image
In preparation for eventual legalization at the federal level, a new bill has been introduced in the Senate, creating a Federal Marijuana Commission.   Senator John Hickenlooper (D-CO) announced Thursday that he would soon introduce the Preparing Regulators Effectively for a Post-Prohibition Adult-Use Regulated Environment Act (PREPARE). According to a news release , the bill calls for the attorney general to set up a commission to make recommendations on a regulatory process for cannabis that would model the system currently in place for alcohol. The proposed legislation is identical to a House companion bill filed by Reps. Dave Joyce (R-OH), Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Brian Mast (R-FL) in April. The announcement came on the 10th anniversary of Senator Hickenlooper's home state of Colorado approving adult-use marijuana by voters in 2012. Hickenlooper was governor of Colorado then and empaneled a task force to help guide the implementation of legalization in the state. According t...

Cannabis Is A More Lucrative Crop Than Potatoes Or Rice In The US - Nothingbuthemp

A new report indicates that marijuana is the sixth most valuable cash crop in the United States.   According to Leafly's 2022 Cannabis Harvest Report , the wholesale value of marijuana topped $5 billion across 15 states where adult-use cannabis is legal. That amount makes the budding new agricultural offering the country's sixth most valuable cash crop, exceeding that of potatoes and rice. That figure is even more impressive, considering these numbers do not include the medical marijuana markets flourishing in an additional two dozen states. Because the plant remains prohibited under federal law, it is woefully understudied and accounted for through traditional agricultural surveys. The Leafly report fills in significant gaps surrounding data gathered on cannabis throughout the country.   Through its exhaustive analysis, the company rigorously studied licensing records for legal marijuana states, sales and tax reports, commercial pricing data, field measurements, US Department...
