Federal Agency Issues CBD Health Advisory

Image
A new health warning has been issued by the   Substance   Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) concerning CBD use by Americans. Since the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, which legalized the cultivation of hemp and the manufacture and sale of hemp-derived products, concerns over the health and safety of hemp products like CBD have prompted lawmakers and regulatory agencies to take action regarding how to best safeguard the public from any potentially dangerous side effects of these offerings. For the first time this week, a federal agency published a new advisory on the “potential harms, side effects, and unknowns” of CBD. As first reported by  Marijuana Moment , the  Substance  Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) created the brief  advisory  not as a comprehensive assessment of CBD and its medical potential but rather as a general guide to warning the general public about “the risks and harms of CBD, espec...

DEA Classifies Delta-8 and -9 THCO As Controlled Substances - Nothingbuthemp

Image
The regulatory agency says the two cannabinoids do not meet the legal definition of hemp and are therefore considered illegal controlled substances. In recent years, there has been a proliferation of hemp-derived cannabinoids flooding the low-THC market, specifically delta-8 THC . Unfortunately, there has been much confusion and misinformation about delta-8 since products containing the variant appeared on dispensary shelves and online sites. Delta-8 is an isomer of the delta-9 THC cannabinoid found in hemp. With the passage of the Farm Bill in 2018, hemp and hemp-derived products became legal to cultivate again. According to the bill, hemp is any part of the cannabis sativa plant containing less than 0.3% delta-9 THC. Any parts containing more than that amount are deemed to be marijuana and are still illegal according to the Controlled Substances Act .      Delta-8 occurs naturally in the hemp plant but at minuscule levels. Therefore, scientists use a process known as ...

Louisiana Is Getting A Lesson In Legal Hemp

Image
Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards isn't happy about the state of hemp in his home state. As first reported by The Advocate this past weekend, Governor Edwards and many Louisiana state legislators are promising a renewed crackdown on unregulated hemp-derived THC products that can cause a person to get "high." Ironically, Edwards and Co. do not need to search very far for the cause of their consternation. In an attempt to bolster Louisiana's agricultural sector, the Governor and a majority of State House lawmakers may have inadvertently created a flourishing market of legal hemp-based THC products with potential intoxicating effects. Hemp products are wildly popular among Louisianans and enjoy broad bipartisan political support. Likewise, Louisiana farmers have been eager to gain a strong foothold in the hemp market. As a result, they have aggressively lobbied lawmakers to lift restrictions on hemp-centric businesses to further their aims. One of those legislators is...

Washington Lawmakers Propose Higher Tax For High-Potency Cannabis

Image
Washington state legislators are contemplating a new "dank tax" for cannabis products based on the percentage of THC in those items. As first reported by High Times , lawmakers want to institute this new tiered sales taxation system to help prevent what they characterize as a quickly developing "crisis" in the world of highly concentrated THC products. In an interview with station KXLY , Washington state House Rep. Lauren Davis, one of the bill's sponsors, said, "Research indicates that between 12% and 50% of psychotic disorders could be prevented if high potency cannabis products were not available. If we fail to act now to counter the emerging public health crisis created by high-potency cannabis products, we will soon have another epidemic on our hands." House Bill 1641 would adjust the current taxation model as follows: Cannabis items containing a THC concentration of less than 35% would be taxed at the current 37% sales tax rate. Items with a TH...
